Orocho was initially interviewed as part of a school paper.  As part of a follow-up to that story which featured students who had traveled to Hanoi from across the continent we were able to ask the following questions.

What is your name? Does it mean anything special?

My name is Orocho Mitamaru and I’m told it means “by the light of dawn” although I haven’t done any research to confirm that just yet.  I was named by my grandfather and he had a particular taste for odd words.  One of these days I need to ask him about it.

Who are your parents?  How have they treated you?

My parents are Philis and Sonam Mitamaru.  I grew up in a household with a pair of dentists, that’s right.  They can be strict when they want to but they let me run off to college halfway across the continent so that I could follow a crazy idea and become a scientist.

Do you carry any resentments towards your family?

*Orocho thinks about the question for awhile* No, I can’t say I have any resentments towards my parents.

What about your extended family?

*subject shrugs* If I knew my extended family I could answer that question but seeing as how they live on another planet in the system I don’t know them.  They don’t want to have anything to do with us and that is fine by me.

Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?

I live in Hanoi as that is where I’m attending school right now.  I like it.  It’s smaller then Eastminster and less crowded.  Plus it was built by a different group of settlers.  The difference in architecture and planning took me my surprise, I suppose.  There’s no light rail or podcar lines here.  I have to walk pretty much wherever I want to go so the last few months have whipped me into better shape then I’ve ever been in.

What level of education have you received?  Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?

I am currently an undergraduate at the University of Earth Sciences and a full time nature nerd who spends way too much time out bird watching.

What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?

Well I already said bird watching.  Does that count?  Otherwise it’s just the daily routine.

What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

The sea birds that built a nest in the railing fragments one floor up.  They make an awful ruckus every morning like clockwork.  It’s a wonder the woman who lives up there hasn’t shot them yet.

How do you handle stress?

I read, watch the lastest dramas on TV when I have the time – that sort of stuff.

Where do you hope to be in five years?

*Orocho thinks for a bit*  It’s hard to say.  I haven’t decided on a master’s program just yet.  That might take me off world for awhile.

Any last thoughts?

I can’t think of anything to add ma’am.  Are you sure you don’t have anything else you want to ask me?

  --------

At first it didn't seem like Orocho would be joining his team at the 6 month interview but he came in just after it started.  The following are his responses.

How have things changed since our last meeting?

The world has lost some of it’s light and joy.  My father was badly injured during volunteer work after the initial attacks and he has needed me to help around the house.  Their practice has been spared, thank the spirits, but business overall has been hurt by the shortages.  They have as many clients as always but it’s more difficult now then it has ever been to get the materials they require.  And, of course, with Father’s limited mobility there are certain procedures he can no longer handle on his own.

How have you handled these changes?

Well, let me think, first we had to navigate the beauracratic mess that is the Labor department and prove that Father was partially disabled so he could qualify for assistance.  Then the clinic had to be renovated, Father underwent his surgeries, and I was about ready to have a nervous breakdown in the middle of all of this.  I’m thankful that Dr. Danesti got me into a convalenscence program when he did.  Otherwise…

*Orocho goes silent, there are inaudible whispers amongst the group*

What do you think of the Akutenshi?  Have they impacted you directly?

The Akutenshi.  Hmm, yes, they have affected me.  It has taken me a long time to accept the memories of that first night.  Voloth…  *Orocho pauses to calm himself*  FC02, that is what my file with the Operators states.

FC?

First Contact.  I am known as First Contact number 3.  That’s why I’m still here even though Beryon is a far better pilot then I.  The scientists are studying me to figure out just how screwed up I am.

*Asanaga calls out from her seat* Hey, if you’re screwed up what does that say about the rest of us?

*Orocho smiles weakly* I guess I never answered the first part of your question.  What do I think of the Akutenshi?  I think they have just as much right to exist as anything else on this planet.  They may be weapons but they are still living beings and deserve the same level of decency you’d afford anyone else.

Do you belong to a Tenshi team?  What is your opinion about all the fighting?

I am a member of the alliance.  I fight when I must but I still believe that violence should be a means of last resort.

Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity.  Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?

I’m afraid I must agree with the governor.  Even if there are survivors on the other planets there is nothing we can do to help them right now.  It’s all the alliance can do to defend this world.

There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded.  Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?

I honestly try not to think about it.  It’s hard enough trying to keep sense of what’s going on around the alliance with the Rotenstiegen causing trouble.

Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?

No, I do not.
