As the title of this post suggest I'm still alive. I did not post anything for NaNoWriMo last year because I did not participate. Don't worry though I have ongoing writing projects that get worked on daily. Anyway the world's going to hell but I'm still here.

We do indeed live in interesting times, eh? If you need something to distract you for awhile perhaps watching someone playing the I'm On Observation Duty series will help?

With winter over and my sinuses assuring me that it is spring it thus becomes time to change the blog's theme. I've settled on colors that I can more or less tolerate. Who knows how long they'll last.

While the start date for summer hasn't yet come in the US as I write this the heat has certainly arrived and with it all the "joys" of it being broiling outside.

But enough about that. I long put off getting caught up on Civ4 AI Survivor season 3 because the matches run for so long and Twitch is often a pain in the rear for me to access. That has been rectified which is part of the reason I got nothing done on Beyond the Beyond update 113 (#worthit!). For anyone who has seen season 1 or 2 but like me put off season 3 well let me just say many interesting things happened: Troll Kon is back with a vengeance, Justinian Trudeau wields the maple sword of justice, and De Gaulle actually managed to do something competent.

That said I'm just enjoying what I can of the season and progress in updating Beyond the Beyond will be slow. There's no reason to hurry anyway. It's all bonus content from here on out. I've got other stuff to tend to.

Progress has been slow and steady. It's something that got split off from Update 109 because it got so long and time intensive. I thought I should give a heads up that it won't be ready by this Sunday, April 22nd. It's not even at the proofreading stage yet.

That's just the way things roll sometimes. It will be done when it's done.

As far as starting a new LP I have given it some thought but there are some loose ends that I really should dedicate some time to finishing up. I haven't made any concrete decisions just yet though. At the moment Beyond the Beyond still has my full attention and that isn't going to change in the immediate future.

So again here I sit on the third day of February and it's in the low 40s (Fahrenheit - 5 degrees Centigrade for those accustomed to that system). That's pretty warm for February where I live. Tomorrow the forecast calls for snow then it'll possibly get above freezing on Monday just so the temperatures can plunge back to the teens on Tuesday for more snow.

Oh and California is back to continuing that drought they were having.

But rest assured that there's no climate change and pumping more money into our fossil fuel overlords (while doing everything possible to destroy other means of energy production) will totally have no harmful ramifications!

Yes, I am starting 2018 on a bitter, sarcastic note.

So where I'm sitting we're about to exit a cold snap (a.k.a. normal weather for winter) and become abnormally warm with temperatures more fitting for early spring. Mmmm, isn't climate change fun? That's a rhetorical question, of course.

In other news work on Beyond the Beyond's epilogue is coming along slowly. I'm not in any great rush since the story as presented in game is complete.

With Beyond the Beyond wrapping up I keep asking myself that question and getting nowhere. I'd prefer a game I've already played several times before. It has to be something I can play on my tablet.

Well first off I hope those who have been in summer the last few months have been able to wrestle some enjoyment out of it. Personally I'm glad to be seeing the tail end even though autumn means hay fever season. I've been waiting for things to calm down and stabilize before resuming Beyond the Beyond (I'd be done with the game most likely if I hadn't stopped). I am tentatively shooting for September 3rd to post the next update.

Yes I know NaNoWriMo is coming up fast but there's not much game left and maaaaybe I can finish it before November. If not I will try to continue through NaNoWriMo.

No, I have no idea what I might do after Beyond the Beyond.

So I decided to go ahead and import my blog from LiveJournal over to Dreamwidth. I do a lot of internal linking so apologies if you're reading a series of posts and clicking a link shunts you over to LiveJournal. Or if video embeds are messed up. Or just general wonkiness. It will take time to get sorted out.

EDIT 1: Things are going slowly. I did get the Beyond the Beyond intro stickied and the links for act 1 in the ToC have been updated. Individual posts have been slow because I can't just edit the internal links. I also have to contend with the way the imported HTML is treated by the editor. Disabling auto formatting just means I have different problems, not that I avoid them entirely.

I went ahead and deleted all of the Ivory 9 entries. Those just aren't tenable for updating. There are better ways to handle that stuff.

EDIT 2: I got the Let's Challenge round-up post updated as well as all of the Rune solo write-ups. The video embeds for Rune should be working now. I had one issue with the CUT tag causing the tables in parts 4 and 4.5 to freak out when the entries are not viewed as single posts. Therefor I deleted those tags and the tables are no longer hidden behind a Read More link. I do that to save page space when viewing multiple entries and to save bandwidth. They're small posts anyway. it's all the coding for the tables that eats up the character limit.

As for Beyond the Beyond I've edited the links through act 2 in the table of contents and made it through update 20 in editing the posts themselves.

EDIT 3: Beyond the Beyond's ToC is up to date through act 3 and the posts themselves up to update 28. The Phantasy Star 4 solo challenge posts have all been updated. Video embeds should all work now.

EDIT 4: Beyond the Beyond's ToC is complete and I've edited posts all the way through update 64.

EDIT 5: editing Beyond the Beyond entries to update links (and fix errant typos) is now complete. I also forgot to mention in an earlier edit that the links in the Dark Wizard resources post have been updated. There might be some things scattered around the blog that don't work as they should but that's all the major projects.

So I'm using my Surface 3 as my main machine. After some work I've been able to do a bit more recording for Beyond the Beyond but ePSXe 1.6 won't load ISOs for me. The recording I've done has been in ePSXe 2.0.5. I wish I could say it went smoothly but there have been issues with zoom (necessary to read at high resolutions on this screen) and the emulator still has a bit of stutter for no clear reason. I'm about halfway through update 90 as I type this and then comes the hard work of a dungeon crawl that I've started. Got a bit confused on one of the puzzles so I stopped recording to work on it.

It's been some time since my last update and the reason is that I didn't have an internet connection for four months. NaNoWriMo went fine. I checked in on Thanskgiving with 80k words and finished the month with 100k words. I didn't get to update my word count after Thanksgiving though. Bummer! Did I write a complete novel? Ha, ha, ha! Of course not! I never manage to do that. Then I spent a whole bunch of time working on things that never get mentioned here instead of anything for Beyond the Beyond.

So I started my day with a hardware failure with my work machine. (I still have my Surface 3 but that has certain limitations.) I might be able to bootstrap parts to get it working again but I can't make any promises. Money is extremely tight here so buying hardware is out of the picture.

Just thought I should put up a notice in case.

I am rather behind on tasks at the moment so I'm going to take some time to try to get caught up. Updates will be sporadic. Welcome to fall northern hemisphere!

It's almost August as I type this update and that means we're getting closer to another year of NaNoWriMo. Ahh, November - that month of the year when I join the hordes in building up a wordcount. I made 84k words last year which is my highest total yet. If I were the ambitious sort this is where I'd pledge to go for 100k. I'm not though. Instead my cynicism merges with my arthritis to remind me that the goal is 50k words and if I reach that and don't break a new records that's perfectly fine.

The irony (perhaps?) of that sentiment is that I took the time to get my word count for Beyond the Beyond up to date and the total, as of update 81, is at 314,215 words. I swear I didn't start out with the intention to write an LP in half a million words! Act 3 is the wordiest so far at 95,953 words total.

When this post goes up I'll go back to writing update 83. That brings me to an immediate update. I'm not planning on posting said update this Sunday, July 31. The reason is that the internet connection in my home has been unstable. A new modem from TWC is only one part of the solution. A line outside has to be replaced. It's getting a lot of interference which has been knocking the modem offline. With any luck that will be complete within 48 hours and things will be stable. Since I can't make any guarantees though I'm just going to use the time to make update 83 a bit more interesting (or at the very least proofread it a few more times).

That brings me to my last point. What to do after Beyond the Beyond? Hmm, that's a good question. My recording options are limited. Should I do another narrative LP? Beyond the Beyond has been lengthy but rather fun for me.

This is just a short update to note that there won't be a new installment of Beyond the Beyond on Sunday, July 3rd or Monday, July 4th. I don't actually do anything to celebrate that holiday here in the U.S. but I have been busy with Shining Force 2 and have been occupied with other matters. When Beyond the Beyond resumes it has to cover some of the last updates in Marion and Bandore then grinding before we can move on to near endgame stuff.

The update is that there won't be a new installment this Sunday (or Monday, just to cover both bases). The next episode has quite a bit to cover and work on it hasn't gotten very far. I've been having bad flare-ups of arthritis in both arms but it's been particularly bad in my right arm. Losing feeling in that hand is rather unhelpful for getting things done!

This is just a quick update on two games. First there will be no Beyond the Beyond installment this Sunday because I've had some other things to work on. As for Phantasy Star 4 Rune tried to fight the Profound Darkness at level 75 and made it past the first form at the low, low cost of using nearly all of his trimates. Clearly that was no winnable so I've been slowly grinding out levels in Vahal Fort as time and energy permit.

Little work on the next update of Beyond the Beyond has gotten done over the last week. I have completed Robin's run through Dark Wizard though so, uh, hurray? All the videos have been uploaded but I haven't written captions for the last video so it is still private at this time. I'm planning on finishing up the solo Rune run next so Beyond the Beyond is on semi-haitus while I work on that.

Updates have been rather slow lately haven't they? Yes they have. I've been working on episode 67 of Beyond the Beyond but work has been slow because it's another of those episodes where I do some plot filling and dialogue between smaller parts of the group so that the characters can relax, resolve plot threads, and just generally allow aspects of their personalities shine through that don't come up when they're dungeon crawling. Right at the moment that I'm typing this update I'm waiting for sundown, working on other stuff, because I have a night set to populate and there's too much glare while the sun is up. The finished update is probably going to be posted in two parts. It's already sitting at over 17k characters and Livejournal has a character limit that I think is about 20k.

As for Beyond the Beyond overall we're past the half-way point. Depending on how I pace the rest of the game we could actually be well past the halfway point. There are only 5 dungeons left in the game and one of those is optional (which means I'm definitely going to do it but we can't get there for some time). Of course one of those dungeons is the most hated in the game. If you've played Beyond the Beyond you probably know what I'm talking about.

I have given some preliminary thoughts about what the next project should be. I of course still have a mountain of tedious work left on Dark Wizard. I'll get that done one of these years. I don't have any plans for another video project. If I do another screenshot LP I'll use a shorter game. I'm not sure what that will be.

Well it is Sunday but I wouldn't really call it much of a fun day thus far. I've been working on Beyond the Beyond episode 67 and it has been coming along slowly and painfully because the kids are in Bandore and I figured I should intervene and resolve some stuff and let Domino get some screen time. Up to episode 67? I knew it would take a while but not that long. Oh well. Don't think I'm going to slack off in giving characters things to do though. A barebones plot won't stop me. If anything it's a challenge!

My work on the back end isn't really done. Then again it is never ever truly finished. I have a near magical ability to miss typos and stilted sentences when proofreading. That's one reason I only update once a week. I prefer to let a finished update sit for a day or two before doing a second proofreading. That helps catch the things that slipped through on the first sweep. There are still a remarkable number of things that aren't caught until later - sometimes months later. I have to keep a list of edits so I don't lose track.

At least I'm not alone on the offerings to Lord Tpyo, Master of Internet. The commentary for Bob and George has some odd typos and such. I can usually figure out what Anez is trying to say even if I do have to read some of the blurbs a few times and tilt my head sideways. Usually. Otherwise I just guess and hope it's right.

Okay so two quick updates about Beyond the Beyond.

First off I played for a good while yesterday. The team's up to 7 members now so if you want to see a particular character in action squawk now or forever hold your clucks. I am already trying to give each character screen time but the actual party configuration for the next set of dungeons is still undecided.

The second order of business is that I need to do some work on the back end. That means there might be some wonkiness and broken images. Just holler if something seems broken for too long 'cause it's easy to overlook stuff.

Oh yeah and I did finish my archive bing of Bob and George. About 3/4ths of the way through I was reminded of why time traveling didn't make me bat an eye when I was watching the first season of King Arthur & the Knights of Justice. Quite the contrary. I got a few episodes in and suddenly it dawned on me how everything could make sense. I really should get around to watching the second season one of these days. I have the show on DVD now so it's not like I have a real excuse.

EDIT

Behold the fruit of my labors (much of it probably pointless in terms of the LP but wevs)! Here are some before and afters from days of copy-pasting and organizing.

Click any of the images for the full size files.

There was one frame of Yeon I couldn't get. I'm still hoping to get more frames from the ork set and Dagoot hasn't shown up yet. Also that soldier sprite in the top right of the set has been a major pain in the butt because I've found all of one NPC with that sprite and they are of course standing partially in shadow. The nitpicky part of me would much prefer a way to get these with correct palettes directly from the game files or VRAM but going from screenshots ensures I won't have any problems using these sprites in any customized sets for the LP.

Every emulator has its quirks and ePSXe is no different. I have no intention of changing emulators or graphical plugins. For better and for worse I'll be sticking with the settings I decided on at the outset.

The third sheet started out as mostly empty space but has seen a lot of filling in. Just from casually playing the game it is easy to not notice how many frames of various sprites don't show up on screen without outright cheating.
