So, as anyone who has followed my work over the last few years might guess, I've played quite a bit of the Sega CD game Dark Wizard. I do love the game despite its many flaws. Today though is a post on how information about obscure games like Dark Wizard is often inaccurate. Specifically I'm talking about the game's Wikipedia page. (Go ahead and read it if you haven't. It's short.)

I'm going to quote some parts of the article and explain where they... aren't quite accurate.

"His anger towards Gilliam and the kingdom of Cheshire grew, and he used his knowledge of forbidden spells to summon four demon generals to conquer Cheshire while he attempted to free the dark god Arliman."

I'll ignore the rather run-on nature of this one sentence and how it should be broken up into two or three separate statements. No, what I want to point out is that Velonese does not summon the "four demon generals" as if he opened a gate and four demons answered the call. He literally creates them from his own body. Velonese performs a ritual that separates four ribs from his immortal body and each transforms into one of the demons. They are a part of Velonese which is why he is able to command them as well as why he can resurrect them with the Call Undead spell.

The game's english manual agrees with this. On pages 3 and 4 it states "Velonese used his forbidden knowledge to summon four elemental demons from his own body and ordered them to wage war on Cheshire while he made preparations to break the seal on the Jewel of Darkness and free Arliman."

So close Wikipedia. So close.

"There is no canonical link between the four characters and their stories, and Armer IX, while seemingly the rightful heir, does not appear to exist in the other three scenarios."

This statement is simply wrong. Amon only appears in his own scenario but other vampires take over the town of Loa in every scenario with the same plan of increasing their number. Amon is presumably somewhere in the world keeping a low profile. The other three rulers as well as the lieutenants of the four scenarios do appear. They're civilians going about their lives in their various towns. Finding them all is actually something of a treat. They don't fight because in those alternate stories their paths diverged and they ended up not being motivated to serve the king, embark on adventure, seek revenge, or what have you.

Armer IX can be easily found in the other scenarios. He's in the tavern in Cheshire Town which is right next to Cheshire Castle. If a member of the Holy Army enters and talks to people he'll walk up and insist that he's the rightful ruler of Cheshire. He even does it during Amon's scenario when Armer VIII is thought to still be alive! This isn't some esoteric thing either. It's well known among the fanbase.

On a final note Armer VIII is called Wynrick VIII in the game's english manual. His son is named Armer. No numbers after that name. He's just simply Armer. However there's no Armer in the internal file names of the battle sprites. There is, however, a WENREEK____. It's file MLUNI096.BIN and yes that file is Armer IX's battle scene sprites. I checked. Somewhere along the line Wenreek/Wynrick got changed to Armer but didn't propagate all the way down the line by the time the manual was written.

Anyone who knows anything about Wikipedia has probably already heard how inherently unreliable it is as a source. (Check the citations!) My point in writing this entry is just to point out a couple of errors as someone who doesn't know everything about the game but has definitely played it enough to spot such blatant errors.

UPDATE: As part of my ongoing effort to keep this post up to date I've been slowly converting my hex stat dumps to a nice decimal spreadsheet. It's a slow process but it has been good for spotting errors. In addition to that here's a second mini-spreadsheet listing the decimal values for classes, movetypes, spells, and all items in the game. These can be found in the Dark Wizard folder as Google documents. I was trying to import and update the stats spreadsheet but Google wasn't allowing that. Instead I've had to upload the new versions manually and delete the old ones.

UPDATE 2: Added the MLUNI### internal file names.
UPDATE 3: Added text offsets list (no disc file names yet for that though).
UPDATE 4: Added a compiled script dump to the Google Drive folder. This is just all the previous dumps in one large file. (See the first update for the link.)

Raw enemy stats as well as all script dumps are available in a folder over on Dropbox. To supplement the above I uploaded a pack of savestates packed via 7zip. These are savestates from Amon's game. It includes most towns although I deleted the early town states because I didn't think at the time that I'd be saving them long term. There are also start files for all the characters so I could compile start data and a few savestates from when I put the game into a badly bugged state. I didn't do anything extraordinary, one of the stage loaders is bugged. Anyway, that said, keep in mind that since these are from Amon's game some of these savestates lead to active battles.

BATTLE EVENT/RETREAT dialogue

------------

The following is text for dialogue played between ending a stage and returning to the
intermission. It includes text for the lieutenants joining their respective leaders,
special events, taunts issued by the demon army, and death messages for the 4 demons.

Some control code has been left in as hexidecimal to keep sequential lines together.

Rather than splitting my time between Beyond the Beyond and Dark Wizard I'm focusing on Dark Wizard for now. Gathering enemy stats for the many different possible battles was always laborious and is demanding even more attention. In a bit of good news I have the majority of the game's text dumped. (I never realized how many towns there are in this game but it is a lot!)

For each stage of the game there are at least four variations of the text spoken at the beginning - one for each possible holy ruler. Many stages have more variants depending on which enemy ruler is in control of the region or event flags. The blocks of text contain control code for the portraits but until I've got a better understanding of how that works I've edited it out. They have been consistently ordered Amer - Robin - Amon - Krystal.

Dark Wizard Misc. Scripts

These are scripts from various points in the game. I have deleted control codes and arranged them as best I could tell into coherent blocks with one sentence per line. I also preserved the order that the lines are loaded into RAM. On a final note the Sabrina/Gilliam text is loaded together and the quest scripts/spirit duels are likewise loaded together.

I sat down for awhile and poked around in the game's RAM while in the town of Castin. Here's what I learned. If I return to mess with the town some more I will edit this post with updates.

UPDATE: I did some simple work with a savestate in the town of Arien. The results have been appended.

I've updated my notes in the previous post on this subject - with the same usual caveats that my notes are chiefly shorthand and subject to change as I get a better understanding of what's going on.  Anyway, enough talk. Let's have some pictures!

Dark Wizard savestate hacking - note that this is with a savesate generated by Kega Fusion 3.43

I uploaded the savestate I did most of the testing for these notes to Mediafire. Armer & Marie's spell lists have been altered but other changes that I made were reversed.

Update 2/3/11: I added some more stuff like hacking the hiring/summoning lists.
Update 2/21/11: a couple minor edits to items while trying to figure out what exactly Fan Letters do
Update: 2/26/12: fixed a case of swapped entries in the item list, added a few notes here and there
Update: 3/1/12: got hacking summon lists mostly sorted out by ruler
Update: 4/20/13: added stats for the other rulers, clarifications here and there, added monster/special unit summoning requirements, stats, and flags
Update: 4/21/2013: checked griffin riders and tempering, results added, had to move unit stats
Update 2/07/2014: deleted the leader stats and calender sections to move them to dedicated posts
Update 5/27/2014: update to status effects and where text gets loaded for various things
Update 5/29/2014: update to the spell list, some work understanding how the game loads and generates summoned monsters, figured out max mobility, located enemy ruler summons tables
Update 6/07/2014: moved most of the summoning/hiring stuff except the enemy ruler tables to a separate post, moved all the status stuff to stay together on here, added portrait headers and text loaded into RAM during game setup that might be part of debugger
Update 8/12/2014: formatted enemy ruler summons tables to something more readable

In a couple of hours here it will be 2010. Holidays usually don't mean much to me (well, except for the good food) and this one really is no exception but it has been awhile since I wrote a status update. So, here it is!

I've been working on one big spreadsheet (that isn't actually a spreadsheet, don't ask...) for Street Fighter to replace the old, out-of-date Storyteller's Screen. For those unfamiliar with what that is it's a 4-panel screen with some nice Street Fighter artwork on one side and some handy GM information printed on the other. It has a list of most of the maneuvers from White Wolf's print run and a number of tables and rules all in one easy-to-find location. To say that it's handy is an understatement.

One of these days I'm going to scan the art side because it is an exquisite painting of the original World Warriors. Anyway, back on track!

So I started the long process of making a new list for my own personal use. Right now it's about to spill over to page 12 (landscape, with a huge table at 8pt font so I can squeeze 33 entries on each page) and I'm sitting here staring at the end of the Athletics section and the beginning of the Focus one wondering if I should split Focus maneuvers off to a separate list entirely. That's because I have very little room to put a description and many Focus maneuvers simply need space for thorough descriptions.

Secondly, the list doesn't have any Hybrid maneuvers on it. I'm planning on expunging ALL hybrid maneuvers from the base technique lists and have them only on the Hybrid list, divided by technique. This is as much for my sanity in book keeping as anything else.

Hrmph, I didn't plan on blathering so long about Street Fighter. In other news Ogre Battle and Dark Wizard are proceeding smoothly although the next battle in Ogre Battle *might* be delayed a day or two. I have lots of footage recorded in ZSNES for the Shrine of Kulyn but nothing dumped so far. Assuming no issues pop up everything will proceed according to schedule and there will be a new part for January 1st.

Recording for Dark Wizard is just flying by. Once you've got a competent army you can simply crush Aracna and Aqua because their monsters aren't up to the task. Sheena's a bit harder with all the Wyverns but she's slow to deploy them. That leaves Karnak who I think I'll tackle before invading Sheena's territories.

Oh well, if I get through the game too quickly I'll start recording something extra to occupy my time.
