Sitting at level 49 trying to beat Dark Force in Garuberk Tower is a complete bust. His Shadowbreath does far too much damage. I even went to the trouble of running from most of the random encounters to try to preserve as much of Chaz's TP as possible (and to suppress experience gains because I wanted to test the fight at as low a level as possible).
EDIT: The damage on Shadowbreath can be reduced by increasing the character's magic defense. I tested this by swapping to a 2 shield combo and chaining heals until Chaz ran out of technique points. With 2 shields damage dropped to the 160 - 215 range with an average reduction of roughly 20 points. Unfortunately this isn't nearly enough even barring the fact that he cannot attack without a weapon equipped.
Looking through the Supplemental Guide over on GameFAQs I find that the only increase to magic defense I could get would be swapping the Swift Helm for a Laconian Helm. This isn't possible because Laconian Helms are not yet for sale. The +2 mdf bonus is miniscule anyway compared to the Reflect Shield's +14 and the Plasma Field's + 11.
