In my last post I gave the whole "No pressure guys!" speech but the last session took the cake for Marianne. Over the first weekend of our training Master Winkai entered his students into a tournament being hosted by Fei Long. We arrived to find what was once a traditional Japanese temple had been completely remodeled into a fully modern facility stripping away all of it's history and sacred space for the sake of glitz and cameras. Master Winkai refused to even acknowledge the place and sat with his head students (the people training us) with a hood concealing his face.
We go through a simple registration process and start the first round of singles matches (one on one fights) for the first day. There are also doubles matches and team matches spread out over the two day duration. Who we would fight first was determined randomly by dice rolls compared to a list of fighters who were a mixture of fighting newbies and experienced veterans. Most of the group ended up fighting newbies for their first singles match - except for Marianne.
The moment the fight starts she is staring down at the face of death in the form of a Spanish man wearing a mask and a claw. Eeep! Completely by random chance the Spanish Ninja in hiding is pitted against a Shadoloo Spanish Ninja who doesn't have to conceal anything. It wasn't even a match to begin with (and we didn't roll it out for that very reason). He had access to his Hado and advanced moves of the style while Marianne couldn't use anything other than basic punches and kicks or risk him figuring out her secret. On the bright side she evaded the claw and grabs. On the other hand she completely froze - deer in headlights style - when he Flying Thrust Kicked her unconscious.
THE DICE HAVE SPOKEN! never rang quite as loudly before
Fortunately Mr. Ninja was later eliminated from the singles tournament by Hiroshi in an extremely close victory. The GM handled the fight as thus: he picked one d12 for the ninja and a d10 for Hiroshi and started rolling seeing who got higher numbers. Best two out of three won. The first two rolls Mr. Ninja got 12s then Hiroshi squeaked by in a comeback victory. After the first few rounds of assbeating he must have decided to take Marianne's advice seriously about Mr. Ninja and never let the former get ahold of him.
Jolienne also got a narrow victory thanks to much Glory burning and some health transference from her man Curtis. In our game you can pay an amount of Glory equal to your Stamina when damaged to make a roll with the same number of dice. Successes negate damage received. The affect lasts for a number of rounds equal to your permanent Honor. Jolienne was getting absolutely screwed over by her dice. She was fighting a skilled Wu Shu fighter who kept negating her damage. Both of them sat at one blow from unconscious for like, six or seven rounds unable to hurt each other. Technically the Wu Shu woman as at -1 from Maka Wara damage and only needed a single point of damage from any hit to be knocked out. Never before have I seen a player so mad at their dice. She had to leave the room to cool off because she was so frustrated.
In the first team match the fight went on for a few rounds and two of the six on our side were knocked unconscious. We were battling the Super Smash Bros. I kid you not. There were four fighters, two men and two women, named Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy who had abilities themed after their video game counterparts and who, by the way, were completely kicking our asses before the match was suddenly called. Master Winkai pulled us out of all fighting for the day and left the temple.
So everyone in our posse filed out and returned to our RV where we were informed by Master Kaori (head instructor for Master Winkai) that they had been sensing the influence of the dark Hado all day and believed many of the matches were rigged. In good conscious they could not allow their students to have their very souls slowly eaten away by the crushing sense of rage and bloodlust. That is where we ended the session. The masters will not allow us to compete in the second day unless they can find and eliminate the source of this corruption. Meanwhile the students are trying to convince other fighters who conducted themselves honorably of the danger.
