Okay so I'm a day late but here are the highlights from the weekend. Not a whole lot really happened - lots of talking! On top of that we didn't get a whole lot of time to play because of player tardiness.
When last we left our heroes Mikhail's friend Doctor Miloska had been kidnapped by members of the Russian Mafia led by one Boris Rasputin. This is a group affiliated with Shadoloo who experiments on fighters using a drug cocktail to rapidly increase their physical abilities. They have one base of operations in Xian China and that is a modernized temple that the Triads have been forced to steer clear of.
Sooo, Mikhail puts together a small posse to get him to the temple by the appointed time the next night. Isaiah and Mortimer refuse on the grounds that they have significant others to protect. Then Mortimer gets a big suprise when one Cindy Weber suddenly sends a limo and requests to meet him at an upscale restaurant. He agrees to the great chagrin of his girlfriend - she ends up storming off and disappearing until the next day.
Mortimer soon learns that Cindy is actually a CIA operative sent to Xian with her partner from the NSA Marcus Friedman. Their mission is to find and rescue an Interpol agent named Selene Thompson who was sent to gather logistics intelligence about Shadoloo. They believe that a man named Samuel Watkins knows her location and that the best way to get close enough to find out is to integrate themselves into the fighting circuit. Cindy's job is to pose as Mortimer's girlfriend with Agent Friedman as her bodyguard.
It is quickly discovered that Isaiah was approached by British agents for the same purpose. This led to Yvonne Stravoski posing as his personal assistant and the charming Henry Preston pretending to be a journalist in Xian to interview the team. After Morty and Isaiah swapped notes in his hotel room and everyone in that posse was clear about what was happening the entourage ran into Marianne and Hiroshi in the hallway as the two were headed down to the pool. Jolienne and her man Curtis almost immediately arrived via the elevator as Marianne, seeing Mortimer's discomfort (he really cannot lie: Manipulation 1, Subterfuge 1), started grilling him.
Eventually Bren, half-jokingly, just blurted out that they were secret agents and that was settled. Plenty of "Why didn't you just say so?" was exchanged and everyone went on their merry little ways. Those poor, poor secret agents have absolutely no idea what they are getting themselves into. :)
The next day rolls around. Isaiah decides he wants to have a little chat with the Triads to try to find Ms. Thompson as soon as possible so he and Morty roll into prison. One flash of a Triad tattoo later and they are squaring off against the local Triad leader deep within the prison. I forgot to write his name down. >.> When they win he is elated that help has finally arrived and agrees to help them locate Ms. Thompson if they eliminate or cripple Boris Rasputin who is muscling in on Triad territory.
After a team interview that day the dynamic duo roll out to the temple by themselves, without telling anyone what was going on. Morty ended up shot, beaten, bruised, and carried around by Isaiah who was using a combination of Ashura Warp and the ability to recover Chi and Willpower each time he knocked out an opponent (tons of pitiful thugs to beat up!) to run around like crazy trying to track Dr. Miloska by his chi. Eventually they find the doctor and then make a desperate dash for freedom meeting Mikhail just as he was arriving.
The result of this craziness is that the team nearly imploded. Jolienne was furious that Isaiah didn't think he could tell his teammates what was happening and so kicked him out. Mortimer was becoming tainted by the Dark Hado due to his rage and frustration at not being able to do more to help his friend so he angrily announced he was leaving with Isaiah. Jolienne, realizing she had failed as leader, decided to remove herself from the team. Isaiah lost a significant amount of weight from his crazy stunt and had to be carried back to the hotel and his Hado reassured that he wasn't in danger any longer.
Marianne avoided getting sucked into the agent mess or fighting the Russians but she had her own problems to deal with. Namely her father had been informed by one of her brothers that she had been on TV practicing Ninjitsu. This was way back during the tournament at Fei Long's temple. He was neither pleased nor amused. In fact he surprised Marianne and Hiroshi when the returned from a date by waiting in their hotel room. He informed Marianne that she was to withdraw from all tournaments and return to Japan immediately or he would withdraw financial support. It was clear - although in the vague ninja code that members of Marianne's extended family use to avoid directly saying anything - that he wanted her to remember that she risked not only her own life but the lives of her entire family.
Unable to convince him that she could pass as Wu Shu Marianne capitulated. She's in no position to fend off Shadoloo and worry that her extended family might consider her a traitor and try to eliminate her.
