We caught up with Asanaga as she was leaving school and put the following questions to her.
What is your name? Does it mean anything special?
My father says he named me Asanaga because it reminded him of how waves sound when he’s out at sea. I can see where he’s coming from with that one but he could have chosen something a little easier to pronounce.
Who are your parents? How have they treated you?
My father is a local fisherman. Maybe you’ve heard of him? His name is Mako. He brought in those twenty foot carp a few years back that made all the local papers. You haven’t heard of him? Oh well, I’ll introduce you to him later.
I love my dad. He’s worked hard his whole life to take care of me. After mom died he was sad for a long time but never let it get in the way of what he had to do. I don’t know how he got through that.
I’ve also got Ms. Burkins, the woman who runs the restaurant next door, to look after me when Father’s gone. She’s been teaching me how to cook.
Do you carry any resentments towards your family?
Sometimes I wonder what mom would be like if she were still alive but no, I don’t really have anything to resent.
Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?
I was born and raised in Hanoi. The sea runs through my blood. I don’t want to live anywhere else but close to it. It’s so beautiful when the sun first rises in the morning. Have stopped to watch it? No? Well I’ll tell you what it’s like.
First everything is darkness and you can’t see anything – not even the waves beating on the shore. Then the first rays of light come up over the horizon and everything turns violet. The waves in the distance dance to the morning sun and the closer you get to shore the brighter the water gets until it shines fresh and clear.
That’s why I love Hanoi.
What level of education have you received? Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?
I attend public high school in town but my real education comes in the summer when Father takes me with him on the annual run for whales and sharks. I’ve learned a lot since I started doing that. I can skin a three hundred pound green back in under five minutes with a good knife.
What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?
Every morning I watch the sun come up and say a prayer to the sea spirits for good luck. They look out for us seafolk.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
I don’t normally sleep in a bed so I guess that question is moot. Oh, all right. I get what you’re trying to ask me. I find the strength to go on because I love life. There’s so much to do and to experience I can’t just sleep through it all!
How do you handle stress?
When things look grim I go for a swim. There’s nothing quite as relaxing as feeling waves break over me on the beach.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I’ll have my own boat! *subject giggles* Father did say he was thinking about starting his own fleet in a few years.
Any last thoughts?
Umm, I can’t think of anything.

Asanaga was present with her teammates when we settled down with them for the 6 month chat.
How have things changed since our last meeting?
It’s already been six months? My how time flies! It’s been wild and confusing and I really don’t know where to start to explain it all. Well I guess I could start with the night everything changed. It was so quiet and suddenly BAM there were aliens dropping bombs everywhere.
I lost my home. Ms. Burkins lost her business. Everywhere there were people who didn’t know where to go or what to do. Father’s boat was ruined but he had friends who helped him get back on his feet.
Has it really been six months since then? I see. No, no I believe you. It just seems like a long time and I’ve hardly spoken six words to Father since then. I miss him.
How have you handled these changes?
*subject does not answer this question and remains silent*
What do you think of the Akutenshi? Have they impacted you directly?
I love my Tenshi! He was terrifying at first but it was all bark and no bite at all. Shuval can be such a big puppy dog like that. Some of the Tenshi are pretty creepy though. Those damn dragons are always going on about this and that and whatnot I don’t know I stopped paying any attention to them a long time ago. Jackal just plain creeps me out.
Do you belong to a Tenshi team? What is your opinion about all the fighting?
I am part of the alliance and proudly so. I’ll do whatever it takes to protect the homeworld. Lucias needs to drop the games and join us so we can drive away the Hylin before things get worse. I don’t know what the beef is with the Rotenstiegen. They just won’t listen to reason. Marcus pleads with them. Ikaia pleads with them. Nothing seems to get through their thick skulls.
Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity. Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?
I disagree with him on the matter. Humans don’t just roll over and die. The other planets are holding out as best they can, I just know it. Once the Hylin are defeated everyone will see.
There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded. Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?
I don’t know why they attacked us. We didn’t do anything to them. For awhile I thought they wanted the planet but now I’m not so sure. I’ve seen them up close. They cannot survive here without special equipment. Yet still they attack us relentlessly. Somewhere on Etol they’ve built a base of operations. What do the Hylin want?
Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?
Why are we talking about Earth? Who cares! Etol is our home now.
