Mr. Blackvault seemed unphased when we asked him for an interview after a long day pouring over surveys and charts. He sat down with us at a little cafe in Hesea within sight of the ocean.
What is your name? Does it mean anything special?
My name is Beryon Blackvault. It sounds a little ominous but I assure you I don’t bite. My name doesn’t mean anything special as far as cool hebrew meanings go.
Who are your parents? How have they treated you?
My parents are a divorced pair living on Sulis. As such I’d rather not talk about them. Trust me, the less said, the better.
Do you carry any resentments towards your family?
I assume you’re talking about my family here on Etol. My wife Rochel is a wonderful woman. I wish she weren’t so skittish about me reenlisting but other then that I think we’ve worked out our differences.
Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?
I live in Hesea because that’s where I’ve been stationed by the company. The forests around here are still mostly uncharted and that gives me plenty of work. Hesea is a small town and I rather like it.
I understand you used to live on Sulis. Why did you move to Etol?
I spent five years in the Stormhammers as a fighter pilot. Although I loved my job I hated the political mess Sulis was spiraling into so I decided not to reup and instead took a discharge so I could become a civilian contractor. They needed more personnel here so I moved to Etol.
What level of education have you received? Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?
I was trained in the Stormhammers to pilot a variety of craft as well as sharpshooting, tracking, and reconnaisance. I can’t go into any specifics due to my employment contract. You understand, right?
What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?
I say a prayer to keep my wife and daughter safe.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
Well, first of all I’ve got a little girl who loves to get up at the crack of dawn and won’t take no for an answer. That’s alright though I’m used to being up early.
How do you handle stress?
Bowling helps when I’m tense, as does a good round of pool.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
My wife and I are looking to build our own house. She’s studying to become a oceanographer so once we’ve got that going for us and money isn’t so tight we can invest in our dream home.
Any last thoughts?
I’m wondering why you want to interview me. You said you’re not with the company but you don’t strike me as a reporter. Oh well, I’m probably just being paranoid.

Beryon was patient with us as we asked our rounds of questions. He calmly answered in the following ways without letting his teammates get out of hand.
How have things changed since our last meeting?
It’s been rough and chaotic. I saw some fighting during the Prefector Wars but that is nothing like this. These aliens use weapons that would never be permitted by any human government for use on other humans. It makes me miss my early days.
Now I’ve got this bunch of misfits for company. I only need a cane so I can shake it at them sternly.
How have you handled these changes?
This change hasn’t hit me as hard as some of these kids. The first attack was a shock but once I got over that it was back to business as usual. I get less time with my family then before the war but what can you do?
What do you think of the Akutenshi? Have they impacted you directly?
The Akutenshi are the only things keeping Etol afloat at this point. I haven’t been affected in quite the same way as the first contacts but yeah, it does have an impact on my life. My wife thinks I’m crazy to pilot a Voloth and maybe she’s right but it’s not that different from what I used to do. I’ll keep doing it until I’m shot down or Etol is safe once again.
Do you belong to a Tenshi team? What is your opinion about all the fighting?
I am a soldier for the Etol Defense Forces. That makes me a member of the alliance. I can understand the Rotenstiegen’s frustrations but that doesn’t mean that I sympathize with them. They’ve caused a lot of damage. They’ve hampered our operations, tied up the political system, and redirected critical supplies for their own ends. The moment this war ends they will have to answer for their crimes.
Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity. Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?
Sulis wouldn’t fall so easily. The governor doesn’t have much military sense so I must respectfully disagree with him. Once communication is restored the governor’s faith in the system will be restored.
There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded. Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?
Back at the academy we had an entire class dedicated to nothing but the Hylin invasion of Earth. It was pretty grim stuff too. Their first strike against Earth’s defense fleet resulted in sixty-percent casualties to both sides. None of my instructors had a solid reason for why they attacked. As I’m sure you’re aware the Hylin are of the shoot first and explain later variety of aliens. Personally I think they see us as a threat. We’re probably like pesky rodents to them.
Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?
There were numerous expeditions to check Earth’s condition and the results were all classified as top secret. That’s military speak for “things are really bad.”
