The bouncing, happy face of young Mr. Martone met up with us ahead of schedule as we were taking in Hanoi.  It was just random chance that he found us so soon but the chance meeting put the team ahead of schedule.

What is your name? Does it mean anything special?

Kitane sounds kind of like katana doesn’t it?  No?  Oh well, I can always pretend.  I think it means something like “obedient son” or some other crap like that.  Obedient, who are my parents kidding!

Who are your parents?  How have they treated you?

My folks are Lin and Yori.  They own a shop just a few blocks from here.  It’s an old place but my folks renovated the building last year so it’s pretty spiffy right now.  After the interview I can take you down there so you can meet them.

Do you carry any resentments towards your family?

I hate going to a public school.  All of my siblings got sent to Ithaca but I have to walk to the crappy public school every day instead.

What is wrong with the public school?

It’s too crowded for starters.  There’s barely enough time to squeeze through the halls between classes and make it to my locker so I end up carrying a ton of books from class to class.  The district is too poor to invest in a digital library system but it can afford security guards and thumbprint locks on everything.

Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?

*Kitane looks around* Umm, we are in Hanoi still aren’t we?  That would be a good clue for where I live.  It’s ok, I guess, but after I graduate I’m going to go see some of the bigger cities on the continent.  This little podunk town just isn’t big enough to support everyone and I sure as hell am not going to join a fishing fleet.  That’s a good way to get killed.

What level of education have you received?  Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?

I am trained in being awesome!  Seriously, lady.  Awesomeness.

What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?

I go to school, does that count?  Well, I guess I have to go to school so that doesn’t really count.  However I usually hang out afterwards and shoot hoops because I know that when I get hom my mom will have a ton of stuff for me to do around the house.

What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

The smell of breakfast.  Ok, I’ll admit it, I can’t resist the smell of good food.

How do you handle stress?

Stress doesn’t bother me in the least bit.

Where do you hope to be in five years?

Out on an adventure in the wilds of Etol.  Maybe even in an expedition into the Ilana Forest.

The Ilana Forest?  Isn’t that dangerous?

Not at all.  It’s only considered dangerous because it hasn’t been mapped and the forest canopy is too dense for surveying from above.  Surely you don’t believe rumors that monsters live in the forest do you?  That’s just silly.

Any last thoughts?

Heh, I have lots of thoughts but none have anything to do with the interview.

   --------

Kitane was next in line to answer during his team meeting.

How have things changed since our last meeting?

I got drafted, that’s a good place to start for changes.  I’m still getting used to being in the military, living away from home, all the scientists and stuff.  My parents lost their shop but two of my brothers returned to Hanoi to help them rebuild.  They’ll be reopening in a few weeks.

How have you handled these changes?

I’ve had good friends to slap me silly when I needed it.

What do you think of the Akutenshi?  Have they impacted you directly?

I owe my life to Shuval a few times over now.  Of course part of that is because Warden and I get ourselves into trouble on a regular basis.  The Tenshi are pretty cool.

Do you belong to a Tenshi team?  What is your opinion about all the fighting?

Yup, I belong to a Tenshi team.  I’m part of the alliance and happy to be here.  I don’t really care about the Rotenstiegen.  Yeah they cause trouble.  Yeah they like to run their mouths.  But as long as they fight the Hylin they’re ok by me.

Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity.  Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?

Hmm, I’ve had time to think about that question while you asked everyone else and I still don’t know what to think.  I guess we have to operate under that assumption don’t we?

There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded.  Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?

Me, personally?  I think they want the planet for their own.  That’s the reason we’re fighting so hard to protect it.  The odds of finding another planet like this one aren’t that great.  It has abundant natural resources.  The only problem is that the Hylin can’t survive for very long in this kind of atmosphere.

Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?

I guess they haven’t.  It’s just been too long without any word from someone there.  It would be nice though.
