These are Tara's responses from the joint interview with her and her sister.

What is your name? Does it mean anything special?

Tara dates from Earth’s country of Ireland and means ‘rocky hill.’  I don’t really know why anyone would want to name their children something like that but Tara happens to be me name and I rather like the way it sounds.

Who are your parents?  How have they treated you?

I have the same parents as Maggy.  * subject laughs * They’ve been good to both of us.

Do you carry any resentments towards your family?

Grandpa should have bought some land up north in the hill country when he had the chance.  Now that the government has put a freeze on all land transactions there’s no way for our family to expand our business.  It’s so expensive to pass certification that unless you’re Astro Light or heavy industry there’s no reason to even bother filing.

Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?

I too live in Redmonton.  I think Maggy pointed out most of the good qualities about our town.  We’ve got the rail lines, ships, and shuttles for getting around the continent and don’t have the hassle that a spaceport brings with it.

What level of education have you received?  Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?

Like my sister I’m in high school.  She might not want to admit it but she’s a fantastic cook with hands like lightning.  Me, I’m boring.  My biggest claim to fame is my ability to read the daily paper in half the time it takes Mom or Dad.

What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?

I’m a meticulous groomer when it comes down to it.  I want everything to look just right before I head out for the day.  I know, I know, I don’t really look the part but Maggy has been helping me see the light of spontaneity.

What makes you get out of bed in the morning?

At home it’s too crazy to sleep in.  My cat Snowflake likes to walk over me every morning meowing loudly because she’s starving and no one has spoiled her rotten yet.

How do you handle stress?

Yoga isn’t my thing so I have pets to play with.

Where do you hope to be in five years?

I’ll be in an undergraduate program down in Edington to start my teaching certification.

Any last thoughts?

We really must get going or we’ll miss the train.  Goodbye and it was nice talking to you.

Tara observed as we questioned her sister in isolation and then answered the same set of questions herself.

How have things changed since our last meeting?

I have a new appreciation for how Mom manages things all the time.  Thank the gods no one in our family has been killed yet but I almost had a heart attack when Maggy had her accident.  It was pure pins and needles that night.

Because of what happened with Maggy I was also registered with the Operators as a First Contact.  I have no idea why they bothered doing that, though.  All of my time is eaten up caring for Maggy.

How have you handled these changes?

I have a good support network.  Before she left the project Nadine was very supportive of us.  It’s a shame she left so suddenly.

What do you think of the Akutenshi?  Have they impacted you directly?

* subject pauses for a deep breath and consideration * Impacted would be putting it lightly.  My sister and I are alive thanks to Voloth-B but it has come at a price.  I can’t bring myself to hate them.  I just can’t.

Do you belong to a Tenshi team?  What is your opinion about all the fighting?

I’m not part of any team.  I just stick around because my sister has her physical therapy through CAART.  Since all I do is give moral support I don’t have any right to criticize those fighting the Hylin.

Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity.  Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?

I think I agree.  It’s not that I don’t think Sulis put up a fight.  I’m sure they did.  But the military here on Etol hasn’t fared very well against the Hylin so I don’t understand how, after so much time has passed, Sulis has really done much better.  That planet has a long history of civil war.  I’m not sure the governments would actually band together to fight the Hylin.

There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded.  Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?

The ‘they want our planet for the resources here’ argument seems pretty good to me.

Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?

There may be a few survivors here and there on Earth but I’d be surprised if our homeworld isn’t a smoldering ruin by now.
