Nadine was one of the harder kids in her class to track down as she was away from her school on the day of the class interview. We had to travel to Barclay to catch up with her as she was helping her aunts with their business.
What is your name? Does it mean anything special?
Greets ma’am. I am Nadine Duvol. I don’t believe either part of my name means anything special but you can take that how you like. My parents say they named me Nadine after a friend of theirs who died years before I was born.
Who are your parents? How have they treated you?
My parents are Adrian and Ghenna. They’ve since divorced so I don’t know if my mother has taken on a new family name. She decided to move back to Thray.
How have they treated me? Well, I guess they’ve treated me just fine, besides hating each other’s guts and giving me an earful of why at every possible opportunity. I can live without that sort of garbage.
Do you carry any resentments towards your family?
I want to them to stop talking about the other side of the family. They live on Thray. It’s none of our business anymore.
Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?
I have a home in Redmonton and in Montblanc although most of the year we live in Montblanc. Both towns are beautiful but I’m not a big fan of the summer heat and humidity by the ocean. Once it turns into fall, though, Redmonton is just about perfect.
What level of education have you received? Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?
I’ve learned how to balance bank sheets, if that counts. Seriously though I might end up as an accountant later in life if I keep up with what I’m currently doing. I’m still in high school, though, to answer your first question.
What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?
My life is too chaotic to have many daily habits. I guess that would only leave room for the bad ones eh? Maybe I shouldn’t admit to something like that.
Would you care to elaborate on at least one of these “bad habits” you say you have?
Sometimes I skimp on my homework. It’s just something that’s so easy to forget about.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
A better question would be “What could keep me in bed in the morning?” Between school and chores I rarely have an opportunity to sleep in even when I want to.
How do you handle stress?
I will confess to having a slight anger management problem. Tai Chi helps.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I’ll be attending school somewhere. I don’t know just where yet or for what purpose. Father needs me for a bit longer until he can hire some more help. It doesn’t bother me in the least.
Any last thoughts?
The governor would be wise to rethink his position on taxing small businesses. Adding a surcharge to use government shipping lines is outrageous on top of all the tariffs we’re already paying. They can think of some other way to raise revenue without driving the lifeblood of this planet into bankruptcy.

We thought the original struggle to track down Ms. Duvol was challenging but once the six month mark rolled around it was only through the good graces of her closest friends that we secured permission to conduct a follow-up. Ms. Duvol agreed only on the basis that no information regarding her whereabouts were disclosed.
How have things changed since our last meeting?
I don’t know whether I’ve grown wiser or more foolish in the last few months but I’ve certainly done things I would have never imagined myself doing. It’s been a wild ride, that’s for sure. I’ve made some friends and some enemies in the process.
How have you handled these changes?
It’s so frustrating not being able to see my father anymore and all because of the EDF. I’d fight but I’m just a kid. What do I know about fighting? Let me go back to what I know!
What do you think of the Akutenshi? Have they impacted you directly?
I don’t want anything to do with the Akutenshi. I’ll have no part in it, especially after what’s happened to Maggy. Those creatures are nothing but trouble.
Do you belong to a Tenshi team? What is your opinion about all the fighting?
I guess you didn’t pick up on my not so subtle hint that I am against fighting and I don’t belong to any team. This is all so stupid. Why doesn’t the EDF use more conventional weaponry to defeat the Hylin?
Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity. Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?
The governor is not a man I would trust with my life. That is all.
So if you don’t trust the governor does that mean you don’t have confidence in the way the military is being run?
Oh I trust the generals in charge to know what they’re doing. I may not like or agree with their tactics but they will do everything in their power to win the war. The governor, however, is a civilian with no military experience and it shows.
There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded. Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?
They’re just an evil species. Fighting meaningless wars is in their nature.
Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?
Why should I? Etol is barely hanging on as it is. You’ve seen the power of the Hylin. When they want someone dead they don’t kid around.
