Atsuki was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to sit down with us and answer our boring questions.
What is your name? Does it mean anything special?
It means “sound of snow” and was given to me because I was born in the middle of a bad winter.
Who are your parents? How have they treated you?
My parents aren’t really anything special. They’re decent, hard-working people trying to make LeFan a better community. They’ve been strict with me but what can I say. Everyone around here is pretty strict. It’s in our blood.
Do you carry any resentments towards your family?
They should be more proactive in dealing with the hidden threats in the forest. Cowering out here behind the wood’s edge pretending nothing exists isn’t dealing with it.
Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?
I live in the village of LeFan. It’s a rather nice little community although I don’t really have anything to compare it to. We manage to make a living here despite the remote location and other natural challenges.
What level of education have you received? Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?
There’s a school here but it’s rather small and I don’t think a person such as yourself would give it much weight in terms of academic value.
I see. You must have a good teacher. What are they like?
He’s a crotechty old man with bad breath but he knows his stuff. It could be worse.
What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?
I have a daily assortment of chores that need to be done. Day in and day out, every season, it changes very little.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
Only people with an easier lifestyle have the opportunity to sleep in.
How do you handle stress?
It’s not all work, all the time around here. I manage to steal a little time each day to be a kid.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
* subject shrugs * I assume I’ll be here. Maybe I’ll be married by then, maybe not.
Any last thoughts?
Hmm, can’t think of anything else to add. I guess I could give credit where it’s due and say thanks to my parents, my teachers, and everyone else who has helped me over the years. I wouldn’t be sitting here today if it wasn’t for them.

Atsuki’s questions had to be custom tailored to not cause undue upset.
How are things Atsuki?
Quiet now but sometimes it gets so loud I can’t hear myself think anymore. Do you understand what I’m talking about?
I think so but could you be a little more specific? What gets loud?
Everything does. Talking, listening, walking, shuffling about, coughs, rubbing hands, rustling papers. Everything becames so very, very loud. I don’t know how to sort it out.
When things get bad how do you deal with it?
The doctors put me on some medicine that helps. I also can go out on my own into the gardens unsupervised. That is the biggest help for me – getting away from other people.
People bother you?
They don’t mean to. They can’t help it. That’s why I like being free to go into the gardens.
Does anyone come to visit you here?
Yeah. Marcus comes by when he can with Asanaga and Kitane. Lucias has visited me a few times and Ms. Medberry works with the doctors here so I see her on a regular basis. I see the others occasionally. I know some of them want to visit me more but can’t.
Lucias? You mean Lucias Wright visits you?
Yes he does.
I thought the Operators and the Rotenstiegen weren’t on speaking terms. Did that change?
No, it hasn’t. He tries to mask his disgust but I can tell he still hates the Operators. It weighs heavily on his mind.
Have the doctors given any estimate of when you might be able to leave?
Their estimates change based on how I’m doing. I’ve heard everything from six months to five years.
Are you looking forward to that day?
Yeah. At the same time it’s utterly terrifying to think of what I’ll do after I leave here. I honestly don’t know what will happen then. I assume I’ll return to the Operators. They …
* subject breaks off to stare into the distance *
Is something wrong?
The interview is over. Dr. Fridolf is coming.
