I was surprised by young Mr. Danesti's sudden candor during our meeting. He was quiet and reserved as we spoke with his father and other members of the office but once he got to talking it was clear this young man had a good head on his shoulders.
What is your name? Does it mean anything special?
Hi, my name is Simon Danesti. It’s a common name and means nothing special.
Who are your parents? How have they treated you?
My mother divorced and left to pursue research elsewhere in the system. My father is Dr. Alex Danesti. He works for the government. My father has balanced the needs of his career and his family fairly well. He has dealt with my problems in stride.
Do you carry any resentments towards your family?
No.
Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?
I live in the city of Little York. It’s cold most of the year but I like it just fine. You can’t let a little thing like snow get in the way.
What level of education have you received? Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?
I have been studying with my father in the field of xenobiology. It might be an outdated field in this day and age but it will help me prepare for more intensive work.
Xenobiology? I thought that was a school of thought long dead.
Xenobiology was useful in the early colonial days of Sulis. It was the school of science that attempted to explain differences between the biological structure of Terran organisms and the creatures inhabiting the planet when humans first arrived. Afterwards it’s use dropped off precipitously as patterns and natural cycles became clearer. The data generated by Xenobiologists was absorbed into the classical fields and eventually the need for a separate school fell apart.
However, much like Cryptozoology it never truly vanished. When it came time to begin research here on Etol the field resurrected itself. I don’t consider it a true science in the classical sense – some of it’s practitioners are lacking in the scientific method – but my father does seriously consider all the data being generated.
What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?
I have a daily routine that includes too much caffeine.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
I awaken each morning at about the same time out of habit. Whether I like it or not I am conditioned to sleep only a certain number of hours.
How do you handle stress?
Since my father works for the government I have access to some of the best medical care which includes being able to seeing a medical professional at any time. For smaller problems I indulge in physical exercise to help me think clearly.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I’ll be in school. It will probably be an engineering institute but I haven’t definitively decided yet.
Any last thoughts?
Please do not give too much emphasis on the Xenobiology section. Sometimes I tend to ramble on about unimportant matters such as that. My father is a respected scientist and the work he does is always of the highest calibur.
--------
Like before Simon sat with quiet patience until his turn came around. He let his teammates speak without interrupting them despite obvious indications that he didn't always agree with them.
How have things changed since our last meeting?
Lenten and the surrounding area has changed very little. The rest of Etol has not been so fortunate. The government has undergone monumental shifts as it reorganizes to deal with the current crisis. For awhile no one was quite certain who would be doing what and for how long but that has all been hashed out now. Because the initial attacks came at a time when the Parliament was in recess and most members had dispersed to retreats for their vacation time many members died. The governor had an opportunity to seize total control of the government but graciously decided against it.
However, I am sure this is all old news to you. You are asking about personal changes in my life, correct? Well I essentially just had a change in the direction of my education. Research suggested I’d be a good match for my Akutenshi and so far that hasn’t proven incorrect.
How have you handled these changes?
Life is all about change and what has happened is no exception. Whenever I have doubts I pull back and think of the larger picture to reaffirm my place in it.
What do you think of the Akutenshi? Have they impacted you directly?
The Akutenshi are not something to be handled lightly. They are quite powerful and we still don’t know much about their history or construction. It only takes one slip-up to do damage that takes years to repair.
Do you belong to a Tenshi team? What is your opinion about all the fighting?
I am a member of the alliance. The fighting is an unfortunate necessity that will resolve itself in time. The Rotenstiegen are difficult to tolerate but they serve an important function by confronting Hylin operations in times and places where the alliance can not.
Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity. Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?
This is a discussion I’ve had with my father and other members of the research staff on several occasions. We have collectively come to the conclusion that in all likelihood the governor is correct and Etol is the only planet in this system still resisting Hylin aggression. It is a sentiment that I personally hope is wrong.
There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded. Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?
The Hylin are a scientific enigma. They speak in a language we do not understand and which they refuse to share with us. They do not offer the hand of diplomacy or even provide any pretense for their aggression. As much as I don’t want to admit it they truly do act like the physical manifestation of our xenophobic anxieties.
Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?
I didn’t have any reason to consider Earth’s survival prior to the war. That has not changed.
