Ikaia was just as surprised as we were when she ran into us during a trip to Hesea with her great uncle.
What is your name? Does it mean anything special?
My name, Ikaia, means sunset in the old tongue. Although that language isn’t used day-to-day anymore it still finds use with names and in talking about things that couldn’t be repeated in polite company.
Who are your parents? How have they treated you?
My mother works for the mayor of Setwan as a statistical analyst. My father has a more traditional role and helps with the herbalist Kim Won in his shop. I like my family. They are always busy but not so much that they can’t stop to answer my questions.
Do you carry any resentments towards your family?
My older sisters put too much faith in getting good marriages. They are fooling themselves if they think that snagging a husband who makes a big paycheck will make life easier for them.
Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?
In live in Setwan which is a town in the Dwidarma Archipeligo. It’s a small place but steadily growing. Maybe a little too fast though. The native animals have been decimated by decades of predation. There are breeding programs on the island for the rarer birds but that doesn’t help the other species in trouble.
What level of education have you received? Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?
I am currently a student in the local veterinary school. I’ve worked with animals all my life so it seemed like a natural choice.
What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?
Well that’s an easy question. I make the twice-daily round of critters for our neighbors and almost always end up chasing down some goat or chicken that’s wandered off because I keep forgetting to lock gates behind me.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
Half the time I fall out of bed from tossing and turning in my sleep. The other half my dad yanks the covers off.
How do you handle stress?
Poorly. When I’m stressed I get angry. When I’m angry I start yelling at anyone and everyone for no good reason.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I hope to be off this island doing something worthwhile with my education. Okay, I tease. I’ll be in school down in Dias if my scholarship goes through.
Any last thoughts?
I can think of a few things but they aren’t even in the last bit relevant to the conversation.
--------
Although Ikaia was not intially scheduled to join the alliance members in the group interview a last minute change in orders included her.
How have things changed since our last meeting?
Misery. That’s the single word that comes to mind whenever anyone asks me what life has been like for the last few months. Misery. It just rolls off my tongue now. The island I grew up on was one of the hardest hit regions.
How have you handled these changes?
I’ve handled them slowly. I’m not proud to admit that I’ve simply run away from the worst of my problems and hoped they didn’t catch up to me.
What do you think of the Akutenshi? Have they impacted you directly?
Not as directly as most of the people in this room. I’m here more for moral support then anything else. I don’t see any reason to get all up in arms because of the Tenshi. Sure, they’re big and can do lots of damage but Hylin weaponry is just as bad if not worse.
Do you belong to a Tenshi team? What is your opinion about all the fighting?
Uh, kinda. I’m a reserve pilot for the alliance. I can’t comment on the Rotenstiegen. It wouldn’t be fair.
I’ve heard that you know several members of the Rotenstiegen personally. Is that true?
I do but I have no affiliation with their organization. They do as they will.
Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity. Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?
I agree with the man. He isn’t in a position of power because he’s an idiot. After everything I’ve experienced I have no doubt that the Hylin are perfectly willing to use anything in their arsenal against the other planets. Maybe we really haven’t seen the worst of what they can do.
There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded. Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?
I don’t like to think about why they attacked. If I do I start giving them feelings and question my own reasons for fighting. They’re evil. Leave it at that.
Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?
Earth is like a fairy tale told to little kids. There are plenty of people whom I went to school with who wondered if it ever existed at all.
