We caught up with Ukiwo while he was sitting in a regional magistrate's office in Setwan. While he wouldn't talk about why he was there he did go ahead and answer our other questions with gleeful abandon.
What is your name? Does it mean anything special?
Ukiwo means “small one” in the old tongue. Hanara is my family name and means “light sleeper.” Yeah I don’t get it either.
Who are your parents? How have they treated you?
My father died several years ago so I just have my mother Alani. That name means “orange tree” so I guess names that mean odd things just run in the family. She has to work so I am usually left to my own devices and whatever trouble my brothers and I can get into.
Do you carry any resentments towards your family?
Father should have been more careful in his job. I also wish my brothers would leave me the hell alone and go pester someone else for awhile.
Where do you live? Do you like it there? Why, or why not?
In live in Setwan, a province of Dwidarma. The islands are incredibly beautiful all year round. I don’t want to live anywhere else.
What is the best quality of Setwan?
The best? You mean I have to choose just one thing? Hmm, the best thing about Setwan would be the fact that it’s an island among islands. You can get on a boat and sail out to somewhere new anytime you like and get away from it all.
What level of education have you received? Do you possess special training or talents that you’d like to share?
I had a couple of tutors while my dad was still alive to pay for it but now I just learn as I go in the Corp. Since I’m so young it’s mostly menial crap but occasionally they let me touch technology.
What kind of habits do you indulge in on a daily basis?
Heehee I don’t think I should answer that question. That might get me into trouble.
What makes you get out of bed in the morning?
Well I’m either a.) yanked out of bed by one of my brothers, b.) nagged out of bed by my mom, or c.) yelled out of bed by Mika when she comes by in the morning to make sure all of us kids haven’t slept in.
How do you handle stress?
I get mad – really mad. If you don’t think you can settle an argument with me with your fists don’t bother starting it in the first place.
Where do you hope to be in five years?
I hope to be someplace that I can draw a nice paycheck and maybe meet the woman of my dreams.
Any last thoughts?
Last thoughts, you make that sound suspiciously like last rites. Should I be worried?

Initially only Lucias agreed to an interview to represent the Rotenstiegen but after hearing that we had spoken to every member of the alliance he contacted our office to schedule a group interview for his team as soon as possible.
How have things changed since our last meeting?
I’ve learned that the universe can be incredibly cruel and unjust. I’ve also learned that if you don’t have the guts to tell the universe where it can shove it’s agenda get out of the way of those who do.
How have you handled these changes?
I make the Hylin suffer at every opportunity. They deserve to experience every ounce of pain they have inflicted on humanity.
You seem to relish the thought of that.
I do indeed. The Hylin are nothing more then animals. If they want total war I’ll be happy to oblige them.
What do you think of the Akutenshi? Have they impacted you directly?
The Akutenshi are the only things standing between us and extinction. I have embraced their power because I want to live. My Akutenshi has changed my life. She gave me hope when I had about given up hope of ever avenging my family.
Do you belong to a Tenshi team? What is your opinion about all the fighting?
I’m in the Rotienstiegen. Fuck the alliance. That bunch of whiney pansies wouldn’t know which way to shoot if the Hylin were waving a damn bullseye in their collective faces. They’re never around when you actually need them.
Governor Xao Lan believes that Etol is the last stronghold of humanity. Do you agree or disagree with that sentiment and what do you think should be done about it?
Damn right we’re the last bastion of humanity! Has Sulis raised a finger to help us? What about Thray? Fuck them! We’re on our own now. The governor is a smart man to realize that he needs all the help he can get and authorizing the Rotenstiegen to operate independently from the EDF.
There have been many theories about why the Hylin invaded. Do you agree with any of them and why or why not?
Shit, I couldn’t care less about why they invaded. Any species that thinks dropping bombs is a great way to say hello should be sent back to wherever they came from in tiny little pieces.
Do you hold out any hope that Earth has survived the war?
