Since I didn't post an update last week here's what happened of note over the last two weeks.
The tournaments actually got started in Xian. YAY! Jolienne won her first tournament - taking first place after two very difficult fights that she won solely because she has an ability that lets her regenerate for free each combat turn. I'm not kidding. A full combat turn after sustaining damage, as long as she isn't burning Glory to negate damage, she makes stamina rolls and starts recovering health. This costs her absolutely nothing and is a passive effect. It came in very handy in the finals when on the first turn her Kabbaddi opponent chi blasted her for over half her life in one shot. Said master realized she wouldn't learn much from the battle that way so she next froze Jolienne and allowed her to regenerate to full health (double healing encased in ice because Jolienne is an ice elementalist). Afterwards was a rough fight.
She's not called Glacier for nothing now is she?
After that victory the group celebrated by going out to the clubs and partying until late into the night. On the way home several members sensed someone's Hado being smothered by an intensely strong negative force and rushed to their aid. We arrived to find a super evil man attacking a blonde woman in a school uniform. Okay, it was more like he was beating the living hell out of her and she was permanently dizzied. A short and brutal brawl later saw us surviving only because Mario and Peach of the Smash Brothers sensed the fight and came to our aid.
There are several reasons we were losing so badly:
1.) Akuma was using every multi-hit maneuver he had. Jumping up and fireballing three people at once is a pretty efficient way to spend your turn.
2.) Before the fight started he shifted into his elemental form of pure darkness making it hard to hit him.
3.) His first action was to Instant Hell Murder our biggest fighter for 17 damage. OUCH. The only reason it wasn't a one-hit K.O. was because Akuma didn't roll well, at all. Strength 8 + Focus 8 + Kick 8 + Punch 8 = owies.
4.) Each time he hit someone or was physically struck that fighter had to make an immediate Focus roll at difficulty 8. If they failed they became slightly tainted by the dark Hado and Akuma recovered health equal to their Focus. Everyone fighting him failed at least once. It definitely hurt the cause when the guy with a Focus of 6 failed. This also restored Chi and Willpower making point 1 above something Akuma could just keep doing all day.
5.) Isaiah put up a valiant blitz but was taken out in one Hurricane Kick when Akuma decided he'd had enough of that.
Eventually he retreats and we stumble back to the hotel to be questioned by the masters and tend to the young woman we rescued. Mortimer had grabbed the unconscious and seriously wounded Isaiah and ran back to the hotel were the PCs were staying at to heal him so the rest of the posse trekked over there.
While Jolienne was checking on Morty and Isaiah she sensed that the party was in grave danger and should not split up. So she gathered everyone back up and we all went down to the garage on her hunch that whatever was going to happen should not be in public. That's where we were stopped by a man that looked a lot like Akuma and stated that he was intent on punishing those who interfered with his student's matches. With a blink of his eye he unleashed the dark side and forced a Psychic Rage check on everyone that went as follows:
Everyone in the affected radius rolled their Focus, difficulty 10. Anyone who got 1 success wouldn't attack one person in the group whom they cared about. Anyone who got two or more successes wasn't affected. Isaiah resisted and Marianne barely also resisted. I rolled one 10 out of 4 dice and that ten re-rolled into another 10. That was good because amongst all the fighters and our sensei Master Kaori the only other character to get even one success was Suki. Yes, that's right, our sensei failed and started succumbing to Psychic Rage.
Each character could resist the call for a maximum number of rounds equal to their Focus (thankfully) or until they suffered damage. Every character who failed decided who in the assembled group they hated the most and then, when they couldn't resist the darkness any longer, started attacking with their most damaging abilities. Most of the group ended up being knocked out but Jolienne had to be shocked out by Isaiah (who was then attacked by a confused Curtis who didn't understand what was happening).
Then Kaori finally snapped (she has a high Focus) and went after Bren, Isaiah's non-fighter girlfriend. It took a combined effort of Isaiah, Jolienne, Mortimer, and Marianne to prevent her from harming Bren and get her to snap out of it. That's good because we soooo were not putting a dent in her otherwise.
However, that wasn't the end of the fight. The dark master summoned three apprentices and ordered them to attack before teleporting out. Kaori ordered Curtis (who offered to fight to Jolienne, who accepted), Mortimer, and Isaiah. Although Marianne didn't fight I did my usual bit of running NPCs which is always fun for me. It gives me an excuse to test out the practicality of different combos without having to buy them with my character's experience.
That was pretty much it. That fight in the garage took a long time to work through. Tons of NPCs and I'm not the fastest person at drawing up NPC combat charts on the fly.
