I actually got an early start this year by diving head-first into my novel writing at the stroke of midnight and within an hour had already hammered out a little over 1,500 words. Since I accepted a 5,000 word challenge for the weekend this meant that I got off to a great start before crawling into bed and boy did it feel great!
I suppose it helps that I had extensive character notes and a quick plot point idea outline to get to a quick start with. Right at the start I had to come up with a quick side character to get one of the main ones on his way. About fifteen minutes later it hit me that this poor shmuck had to die. Sorry guy but your death serves multiple purposes so here's a nice deadly explosion to end your existence.
Right now I'm up to 3,000 words. Like last year I will NOT be including chapter titles and the like in my word count. I won't be home for part of tomorrow so here's hoping I can hammer out another 1,000 words before the night is over with. It all comes down to being able to focus and stop letting my mind wander off wherever it wants to go.
