Well I completed my first run through the game about an hour ago. I was both psyched and apprehensive about the last parts of the game but it wasn't as hard as I suspected it would be. Of course I was being an incredible packrat the entire game. So much so that, AFTER healing back up to full in preparation for the final boss, I still had 97 repair units and 61 power units. At 400 health/energy a pop that comes out to 38,800 extra health on top of the 8,000 the Griffon has at max and 24,400 energy plus the 8,000 it has stored onboard.
With reserves like that the final boss was a piece of cake. The threat was having my weapons broken or just not hitting him - not dying. I let both gauges drop to around 2k then refilled them about 2/3rd the way through the fight. I didn't even bother with the shield because the boss's rate of fire is so high.
However, it still leaves me with some technical questions.
An upgrade not mentioned in the game's documention exist for both the beam gun and the vulcan machine gun. They are, respectively, the Power Beam Gun and the Heavy Vulcan. I found the PBG in the last level but the HV dropped from the very last enemy as a random pickup. That makes me wonder if there isn't a 4th tier for the Gun Launcher, Rocket Launcher, and Linear Cannon. I also wonder if the developers ever intended for the player to use the last 2 Bombs. You initially pick up an 8-pack then use 3 of those to disable part of the factory. Later you use another 3 as part of a trap. So at the end of the game Jim has 2 bombs and no use for them.
