Arcana should be wrapped up within two weeks of this post barring any catastrophes. In the meantime I've had a serious hankering for screenshot LPs so I've been ravenously consuming them over at lparchive.org. After reading their Phantasy Star 3 LP I moved on to the sequel and was not disappointed. Halfway through I wondered if anyone had done any solo runs and, if so, how challenging it was.
This led me to GameFAQs where I found several solo threads. Although TAS runs are interesting in the amount of game-breaking you can do I was looking for something that didn't involve cheating or luck manipulation. As it turns out a user named HaShrike has been working on solo runs off and on for several months (there's a second thread where he finished his Chaz run) - being stuck on Rika currently.

"Ok, so it's possible and looks like a decent challenge," I say to myself before firing up KEGA. I had no idea what exactly I was getting myself into. Meh.

I've just defeated Lashiec and recovered the Eclipse Torch and I must say it's pretty darn hard. Most of the random enemies are pretty easy - going down in 1 or 2 hits once Chaz has piled on the first dozen levels. The challenge skyrocketed in Ladea Tower with Gy Langiuah. Now, I've played PS4 several times all the way through and have a decent grasp of the game. I decided not to consult any FAQs or guides and go purely by memory. I was thus a little relieved to find I wasn't the only one who ran headlong into a brick wall with Gy Langiuah.

Gy, along with several other bosses, has an extremely annoying auto-critical ability. This means that EVERY physical attack they make is a critical hit automatically. I had to swap to a knife + barrier combo and gain half a dozen levels before beating him. Even then I ended with a paltry 3 HP and 5 TP.

Those few steps to reach the chest with the Psycho Wand were positively nerve wracking. (Getting the wand transports the group back to Krup and restores everyone to full health.)

Anyway I could rant about the interim between then and where I'm at now but that would take too long. Instead I'll just post a few screenshots to demonstrate that Chaz has indeed slain Lashiec, is level 48 (having gained one level with his victory) and has the Eclipse Torch.
