Well after trying and trying and trying to defeat Dark Force 2 I've found the only solution is to go level some more. It is primarily for more hit points but Chaz's mental stat slowly rises as well. This is incredibly useful although the small gains won't reduce the damage on Shadowbreath by any great amount. I'll take whatever reduction I can get though.
Consulting the Technical Guide again I find the formula for magic defense is listed as thus:
mdfs= base mtl + equipments magical defense power
mdfs = magic defense while base mtl = base mental stat
This means that a character's magic defense rating is their mental stat plus all modifiers from their equipment. This is why Rune takes so little damage from most spells. His mental attribute starts pretty high and grows quickly as he levels.
The formula for magical damage is given as thus (the formula is a rough estimate based on averages). The one exception, which would otherwise seem to be a spell, is Corrosion which uses physical defense instead of magical.
A) Damage done by magic attacks:
the average damage inflicted on an enemy by magic Y can be predicted by
damage= [(Y-base + 1/2 caster's ib mtl) * enemys Y-factor] - enemys ib mdfs
This parses out as: damage = [(spell's base value + one half the caster's in-battle mental attribute) multiplied by the target's sensitivity factor] which is then reduced by the target's in-battle magic defense value. A sensitivity factor is a number ranging from 0 to 4 which is used as a null or a multiplier in the equation. A sensitivity factor of 0 is immunity while 3 or 4 mark a grave weakness.
In other words exploiting sensitivity factors is very important.
Here are Chaz's stats after going over to the Weapon Plant and grinding for a little while. At least with the experience solo characters gain leveling is pretty quick - especially with KEGA's fastforward function and macros!

He's gained 6 more mental points since level 49. Yay! The largest experience-per-battle gain to be had in the Weapon Plant comes from the Life Deleter battle.

However it's not the fastest overall since you first have to defeat one of the Arthropod's for the other two enemies to form into the Life Deleter while offing Wren for the fight and, of course, Life Deleter's can use Stasis Ball which can result in this...
