The counter on the NaNo site always comes up with more then what Word says.  I suppose that's a good thing.  I have a few more pages handwritten then what I've counted which will be tallied tomorrow/later today.

So I was sitting at my computer today not sure of what to write.  I know the general direction the story is heading in and what major bits need to be elaborated on but the details are largely being made up as I go along.  Today, however, marked the first time someone has died in the narrative.  Too bad it's just a character who existed for a whole five minutes before being offed.  That's not to say the main characters aren't affected because they are.  If anything it gives me an excuse to demonstrate what the consequences of the world they are slipping into can become if they aren't careful.

Deaths are not something that factor heavily into my work.  Yes, more people are going to die but I abhor killing characters purely for shock value or to make a main character look badass.  A basic principle I learned playing Everquest applies here:

If you have to tell me you're uber, you're not.

It's as simple as that.  I think I'm smart enough to figure out who is "uber" or not on my own.  For more complications regarding what happens when a narrative tries to demonstrate badassness see my post on The Amazing Story of Superman and tvtropes.org.
