I know, I know. It's not even October yet! I have to start preparations rather early these days because I don't start new writing projects come November. I have way too many unfinished ones to be adding any new ones to the pile. Instead I use the month to work on something sidelined earlier in the year. Then December arrives and I'm usually sick of looking at whatever I just spent the previous thirty days working on.

That way when next I look at it I can go "What was I thinking when I wrote this garbage?" Also, "I sure am good at not noticing typos everywhere while I'm working on something." (This unfortunately was true when I was writing an update for Beyond the Beyond every week. There were many quiet edits to unmangle things.)

This year there's supposed to be a big revamp of the NaNoWriMo website. I haven't checked out the preview site because, quite frankly, I'm already a bit burned out on being an unpaid beta tester. Just yesterday I was doing some spellchecking in Libre Office and the program kept crashing when moving to the next spellcheck item in the queue. I did get through it eventually since it was mostly me adding words to a custom dictionary and not many misspellings to correct.

For anyone about to ask "Why don't you use Open Office?" let me pre-emptively answer. I've used Open Office for years. It has a nasty bug that causes a crash when tables get moved across page divides as a result of typing ahead of the table pushing its position down. Since I use plenty of tables this is kind of a problem. It doesn't happen to every table but when it hits there's no way to work around it except to add a forced page break ahead of the table. Open Office doesn't get much in the way of development these days so I've been getting used to Libre Office in its stead.

With winter over and my sinuses assuring me that it is spring it thus becomes time to change the blog's theme. I've settled on colors that I can more or less tolerate. Who knows how long they'll last.

Welcome back to the long-running post game extra content. We're moving right along to our next highlight.

I haven't finished this game yet but I have been playing it off and on for the last month. The plot has been hit or miss thus far and the difficulty curve has definitely leaned towards lenient (perhaps even easy). I may have to try a second run using the Draconian settings to get a fuller assessment of the difficulty curve. I will say that a willingness to make gear ahead of time specifically to resist the game's many status effects can make a big difference.

Hey if the game's gonna let me completely change a character's gear load-out in the middle of battle I'm going to use it! Doesn't even make the character lose a turn.

Overall I've been enjoying it. Even when the plot has been stupid I've been entertained by laughing and making snarky comments.

It's a good thing I crossed the 50k threshold yesterday (logging 4,000 words) because today I only got in just slightly under 1.5k words. Instead I spent the day watching the MST3K Turkey Day Marathon. Or more precisely only kind of paying attention to the movies and instead watching chat go flying by. Much fun was had.

R.I.P. Megaweapon
Your spiky, explodium-fueled zaniness had me in tears from laughing at all the jokes.

So in my last post I lamented that my notes are only partially organized and that I have 120 named characters in the character list. Oh folly of mine...

It's almost halfway through November and my named character list sits at 208. I can almost populate an MMO.

November has rolled around once more so its time to chuck everyone else to the side and write, write, write. I actually got an early start early in October because I decided to continue something I started during a previous NaNoWriMo. I had an array of choices. Thus I spent October revising, reading, and trying to make sense of my scattered notes.

Now it's November 3rd and my notes are only partially organized. There are thus far 120 named characters in the character list and I'm sure I missed more than one. The revision process back in October only got 1/3 of the way through the big pile of already written material. Today I'm trying to skim through parts of the other 2/3s to figure out where the plot is going. I have some buffer time though. Revisions turned up some gaps that I'm now figuring out how I'm going to fill. My word count for today might consist solely of summary notes to myself that I'll later delete after I write out those sections.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 113: Bonus material, pt. 5

Welcome back. At the end of the last update I posted a teaser screenshot. Now what was that?

As the title of this post lays out it's almost that time of year again. Of course I work on projects year round so I don't exactly need it to motivate me. NaNoWriMo is my excuse to put that stuff aside and spend thirty days writing more for funsies. There are 45~ish days to go to prepare.

This post is just a bit of fair warning that I am going to spend time prepping. For those waiting on Beyond the Beyond part 113 just know that I have to do some extra recording for a particular glitch and then I can finish writing it. I keep putting that off while I still have the enthusiasm to work on something else.

Good luck to anyone planning on participating in NaNoWriMo this year. May the plot bunnies be helpful!

Some readers might already be familiar with an RPG called Titan Quest. It's basically Diablo in ancient Greece. It was released previously on Steam and I must say to anyone looking to play the game get that version instead. After some time with the PS4 port I must say THQ Nordic dropped the ball on the port.

It was released March 20th, 2018 and here I sit on August 16th, 2018 disappointed that patching the game has done NOTHING to fix the following core issues with the port. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list since I've only seen portions of the game.
  1. Manually targeting monsters in battle rarely works. Fighting one enemy in a group and the game decides to swap your targeting to something else? Good luck getting it back until after you've killed that second foe. Particularly egregious against bosses who are huge damage sponges.
  2. Likewise targeting items on the ground to pick them up is extremely finicky. In order to pick up any drop the player has to find and maneuver over a few pixels next to the item to get its name to highlight. It's neither fun nor exciting doing laps around a gold drop or potion trying to find that tiny activation area. It gets especially bad in indoor areas where chests sit on boxes, next to walls/pillars, or there are other obstructions around them. The steam version handles this with mouse-over and of course the PS4 doesn't natively employ a mouse so it had to be changed but the implementation is lacking.
  3. Spoken dialogue does not sync with dialogue windows. The text scroll is far too slow. In fact it's so slow NPCs can finish the spoken portion of their script and then move on to walking around or doing other things while the window is still trying to catch up! For a player trying to read the dialogue this is aggravating.
  4. Frame rate issues are rampant. If you hate lag you are going to have a very bad time with this game. The laggiest times I've seen aren't even in combat, thankfully. One of the laggiest spots seen thus far was a single vendor and a teleport by the water where the game just starts struggling for no good reason. It's embarrassingly bad.
  5. Texture/model popping is also rampant and may factor into the framerate drops. Nothing quite like walking down a dirt path bordered by grass and seeing the grass flicker in and out of existence. Apparently this is after a so-called upgrade to the graphics. Frankly I'm hard pressed to see how this is an improvement.
  6. The magma golem might spontaneously disappear. It isn't dead - it's lifebar is still intact - but it's nowhere around. Eventually it reappears. Eventually. It can be resummoned but that takes time and mana and in combat both of those can be in short supply.
  7. The game might just up and crash. Remember to save often!
  8. When the player has one or more pets and is stationary said pets don't remain stationary. Instead they wander around a bit on a short leash. This is a problem when they hit NPCs because the entire screen shakes. The most common NPC a player might be stationary next to? Vendors, of course! Have fun trying to shop while your pet is trying to move through an NPC and failing causing the game to act like it hates everyone with motion sickness.
In short, save your money. Get it on steam or a Diablo clone actually designed to work on Playstation hardware. Titan Quest clearly isn't.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 112: Bonus material, pt. 4

In our last episode I did a lot of bouncing around trying to figure out how the game would react to recruiting Domino early. In today's episode there will be more bouncing around but on different subjects!

Beyond the Beyond: Update 111: Act 5 Bonus Material, pt. 3

In the last update I covered a few more things from the manual and then took an extremely detailed look at one scene in the game. In this collection of bonus material I'll be covering events within the game. Keep in mind I'm going to be doing a lot of bouncing around various tests with different party setups and different event flags. With that said, let's roll!

Beyond the Beyond: Update 109: Act 5 wrap-up and Bonus Material, pt. 1

This update and those that follow will cover not only extras from the game's fifth and final act. Since the game's plot has concluded there's no longer any worries about spoiling anything and thus longer-spanning issues can be broached.. First though I must, like all previous wrap-ups, go through the act recap. I didn't include many summaries at the end of updates because there aren't a whole lot of events in act 5 to summarize.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 108: And Then... (Epilogue)

The game's official ending might have rolled but that doesn't mean the story I've laid out is quite done. If you're looking for bonus material as has been seen previously that will come with the next update - as will the act 5 recap. That said it's time for the epilogue to play out!

Beyond the Beyond: Update 105: Legacy of the Agreement (The Abyss pt. 5)

The grinding's all done - as in I've reached the limit of what I'm willing to stand - so let's get this descent into the Abyss going again. The plot isn't going to... well actually it will sit around forever waiting for me to get there because we're on RPG Time but I've run out of ways to delay this. Anyway with that said this game is fast coming to a conclusion.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 104: Just A Stroll Into The Abyss (The Abyss pt. 4)

With both of the sealed doors open it might seem like the team's ready to enter the Abyss's deepest depths but it actually isn't. This is going to be a bit more lighthearted then the last few updates on account of the team doing what it does best: treasure hunting! Consider it a bit of a breather before the game's end.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 103: Another Side, Another Story (The Abyss pt. 3)

When last we saw the team they had just exited the Abyss having made the long walk down to the Statue of Light at the bottom. That's half the task completed but the other half will be just as time consuming.
