Beyond the Beyond: Update 92: Hypothermia (Ice Mine pt. 2)

The last time we saw them the team spent entirely too much time stuck on a single ice puzzle. This time they're going to spend entirely too much time stuck on a different ice puzzle. Progress!

Beyond the Beyond: Update 91: Slippy, Slidey Icebox (Ice Mine)

The last time we saw the team they were freezing their collective tushes off. Sadly that's not going to change for this update because the team needs to go deep into the icy depths of this cave in order to reach the goodies hidden within.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 90: Into the Dragon's Heart (Dragon's Shrine)

When last we saw our intrepid heroes (before our latest bonus update) they had raised Arawn's Flying Palace from its resting place in the ocean but at the cost of losing Steiner to one of Dagoot's magical arrows. Oh yeah and Dagoot finally decided to enter the plot. He's been kind of hanging around... somewhere. His laziness has been to the team's benefit.

So I'm using my Surface 3 as my main machine. After some work I've been able to do a bit more recording for Beyond the Beyond but ePSXe 1.6 won't load ISOs for me. The recording I've done has been in ePSXe 2.0.5. I wish I could say it went smoothly but there have been issues with zoom (necessary to read at high resolutions on this screen) and the emulator still has a bit of stutter for no clear reason. I'm about halfway through update 90 as I type this and then comes the hard work of a dungeon crawl that I've started. Got a bit confused on one of the puzzles so I stopped recording to work on it.

It's been some time since my last update and the reason is that I didn't have an internet connection for four months. NaNoWriMo went fine. I checked in on Thanskgiving with 80k words and finished the month with 100k words. I didn't get to update my word count after Thanksgiving though. Bummer! Did I write a complete novel? Ha, ha, ha! Of course not! I never manage to do that. Then I spent a whole bunch of time working on things that never get mentioned here instead of anything for Beyond the Beyond.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 89: Act 4 wrap-up and bonus material

The team has managed to stumble its way through another part of the story so, like before, it's time to stop and see what's been going on under the game's hood. First though there's a little matter to attend to. That's right it's time for...

So I started my day with a hardware failure with my work machine. (I still have my Surface 3 but that has certain limitations.) I might be able to bootstrap parts to get it working again but I can't make any promises. Money is extremely tight here so buying hardware is out of the picture.

Just thought I should put up a notice in case.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 88: When Bad Plans Come Together (Flying Palace pt. 2)

In our last episode the team raised the Flying Palace to the ocean's surface. Daring to venture inside they found a motif totally alien to them. Also, there were traps. And monsters. And cursed treasure. And non-cursed treasure. And dragons. And a total lack of ice cream sundaes. And bewilderment over what Arawn has planned. And Finn's ongoing bad day. Overall it's been kind of mixed.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 87: Walk Like A Faux-Egyptian (Flying Palace)

So in our last episode the team traversed the strange and magical depths of Pity Island. I suppose the biggest pity is that without the Ancient Tablet the island has lost whatever purpose it had and now just gets to be an isolated land of monsters cut off from the rest of the world until someone invents the airplane. Or somehow removes some of the shoals from its shores. I suppose that's also an option.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 86: Depths of the Earth (Pity Island)

Having claimed Bandore's Ancient Tablet, which Shutat and his gang somehow managed to completely miss, leaves just one to find. That one tablet rests somewhere on the island known as Pity. Unfortunately the shrine-like structure in the center of Pity actually leads to a dungeon.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 84: The Lush Land of Aridia (Loose Ends pt. 2)

Welcome back. Today the team has some more loose ends to tie up before it moves forward with the hunt for tablets. It's best to get this out of the way before diving head first into the next dungeon. Lorele needs a level up so she can join the rest of the team in Enlightenment. She and Domino will always be a bit behind stat-wise just because they won't get those few post 20 levels like the rest of the team but with all the gear that's popping up being for post-promotion classes I consider it more important to keep that up to date.

So, as anyone who has followed my work over the last few years might guess, I've played quite a bit of the Sega CD game Dark Wizard. I do love the game despite its many flaws. Today though is a post on how information about obscure games like Dark Wizard is often inaccurate. Specifically I'm talking about the game's Wikipedia page. (Go ahead and read it if you haven't. It's short.)

I'm going to quote some parts of the article and explain where they... aren't quite accurate.

"His anger towards Gilliam and the kingdom of Cheshire grew, and he used his knowledge of forbidden spells to summon four demon generals to conquer Cheshire while he attempted to free the dark god Arliman."

I'll ignore the rather run-on nature of this one sentence and how it should be broken up into two or three separate statements. No, what I want to point out is that Velonese does not summon the "four demon generals" as if he opened a gate and four demons answered the call. He literally creates them from his own body. Velonese performs a ritual that separates four ribs from his immortal body and each transforms into one of the demons. They are a part of Velonese which is why he is able to command them as well as why he can resurrect them with the Call Undead spell.

The game's english manual agrees with this. On pages 3 and 4 it states "Velonese used his forbidden knowledge to summon four elemental demons from his own body and ordered them to wage war on Cheshire while he made preparations to break the seal on the Jewel of Darkness and free Arliman."

So close Wikipedia. So close.

"There is no canonical link between the four characters and their stories, and Armer IX, while seemingly the rightful heir, does not appear to exist in the other three scenarios."

This statement is simply wrong. Amon only appears in his own scenario but other vampires take over the town of Loa in every scenario with the same plan of increasing their number. Amon is presumably somewhere in the world keeping a low profile. The other three rulers as well as the lieutenants of the four scenarios do appear. They're civilians going about their lives in their various towns. Finding them all is actually something of a treat. They don't fight because in those alternate stories their paths diverged and they ended up not being motivated to serve the king, embark on adventure, seek revenge, or what have you.

Armer IX can be easily found in the other scenarios. He's in the tavern in Cheshire Town which is right next to Cheshire Castle. If a member of the Holy Army enters and talks to people he'll walk up and insist that he's the rightful ruler of Cheshire. He even does it during Amon's scenario when Armer VIII is thought to still be alive! This isn't some esoteric thing either. It's well known among the fanbase.

On a final note Armer VIII is called Wynrick VIII in the game's english manual. His son is named Armer. No numbers after that name. He's just simply Armer. However there's no Armer in the internal file names of the battle sprites. There is, however, a WENREEK____. It's file MLUNI096.BIN and yes that file is Armer IX's battle scene sprites. I checked. Somewhere along the line Wenreek/Wynrick got changed to Armer but didn't propagate all the way down the line by the time the manual was written.

Anyone who knows anything about Wikipedia has probably already heard how inherently unreliable it is as a source. (Check the citations!) My point in writing this entry is just to point out a couple of errors as someone who doesn't know everything about the game but has definitely played it enough to spot such blatant errors.

It's almost August as I type this update and that means we're getting closer to another year of NaNoWriMo. Ahh, November - that month of the year when I join the hordes in building up a wordcount. I made 84k words last year which is my highest total yet. If I were the ambitious sort this is where I'd pledge to go for 100k. I'm not though. Instead my cynicism merges with my arthritis to remind me that the goal is 50k words and if I reach that and don't break a new records that's perfectly fine.

The irony (perhaps?) of that sentiment is that I took the time to get my word count for Beyond the Beyond up to date and the total, as of update 81, is at 314,215 words. I swear I didn't start out with the intention to write an LP in half a million words! Act 3 is the wordiest so far at 95,953 words total.

When this post goes up I'll go back to writing update 83. That brings me to an immediate update. I'm not planning on posting said update this Sunday, July 31. The reason is that the internet connection in my home has been unstable. A new modem from TWC is only one part of the solution. A line outside has to be replaced. It's getting a lot of interference which has been knocking the modem offline. With any luck that will be complete within 48 hours and things will be stable. Since I can't make any guarantees though I'm just going to use the time to make update 83 a bit more interesting (or at the very least proofread it a few more times).

That brings me to my last point. What to do after Beyond the Beyond? Hmm, that's a good question. My recording options are limited. Should I do another narrative LP? Beyond the Beyond has been lengthy but rather fun for me.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 82: Pyramid Power (Tablet Shrines)

There's no sign of Shutat anywhere. He, his crew, and his battleship have all apparently gone invisible and wandered off to some distant corner of the world. In light of that strange reality the team has little choice but to figure out what the deal is with those tablets they've been collecting.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 81: Bandore Back Together (Bandore pt. 2)

With a quick trip back to Marion behind them the team turns its attention towards Bandore. Sir Galahad returned to Marion so things in Bandore should be all calmed down. At least, that's the theory. We'll see if that's actually true. Once that's out of the way then the team can embark on a search for the remaining Ancient Tablets - assuming nothing nefarious pops up.

Beyond the Beyond: Update 80: Marion Recoups (Marion Kingdom pt. 4)

Last time the team gained a new member! Also, they can fly around on Steiner now and sort of have a goal in collecting the Ancient Tablets. They were carrying a tablet for quite some time but it's in storage now. (In their defense it has been quite a long time since Arawn told them they needed to do just that. They've been busy little bees since then!) They're still utterly clueless on where to find Shutat so that fetch quest will have to do.

Welcome back. The last time we saw Rune he had cleared out all the optional stuff he's ever going to worry about as well as trounced the guardians on Rykros. One task remained: securing Elsydeon. The sword is useless for Rune but plot flags demanded it be retrieved from the depths of the Esper Mansion.

This is just a short update to note that there won't be a new installment of Beyond the Beyond on Sunday, July 3rd or Monday, July 4th. I don't actually do anything to celebrate that holiday here in the U.S. but I have been busy with Shining Force 2 and have been occupied with other matters. When Beyond the Beyond resumes it has to cover some of the last updates in Marion and Bandore then grinding before we can move on to near endgame stuff.
